In July 2000, The University of California Board of Regents approved the establishment of the UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS). The School matriculated the first class of twenty-five Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) students in the Fall of 2002. The Doctor of Pharmacy class size will increase to 60 students per class by 2005. The projected steady-state enrollment will be 240 Pharm.D. students, 60 Ph.D. students and 30 pharmacy residents.
The UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is located on the Health Sciences Campus in La Jolla. The pharmaceutical sciences building serves as the education and research base for the School and is designed with contemporary computational and informatics facilities and connections to clinical sites throughout the state. Clinical teaching facilities include UCSD affiliated teaching hospitals, outpatient clinics and other institutions in the San Diego area.

The UC San Diego School of Medicine was founded just over 40 years ago, entering its first class in 1968, and in that short time has become a world-class institution, recognized as having global leaders in research, technology, translational medicine, education and clinical excellence.
In fiscal year 2008, the School of Medicine ranked 12th in the nation in NIH research funding and ranked 15th out of the nation's 120 research-intensive medical school programs by U.S. News and World Report.
The School of Medicine's faculty of more than 1,000 are consistently ranked in the top two nationally in research funding per faculty member.
The school welcomes 134 new medical students each year and has joint degree programs with the UCSD general campus and San Diego State University in Public Health, Clinical Psychology and Audiology.
Recently, the school had the groundbreaking for a new Medical Education-Telemedicine building, which will be equipped with the latest in telemedicine and medical and surgical simulation technologies.
Additionally, there are various research buildings and affiliated programs located on the School of Medicine campus including the Leichtag Family Biomedical Research Facility, the Cellular and Molecular Medicine Building complex - which includes the Palade Laboratories, and the Stein Institute for Research on Aging. Nine Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers and seven Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research researchers are housed on our campus as well.
