Weifang Medical University

◆ Introduction

     Weifang Medical University (WMU), located in Weifang, the famous world kite capital in Shandong Province, is a provincial one with a history of more than 50 years. It covers subjects of both art and science, such as medicine, health management and law. It has been qualified for the education of both master and bachelor degree students.

     WMU covers an area of 540, 000 square meters with 300, 000 square meters of buildings. Now the University has a staff of 1, 300 members and about a total of 10, 000 students with 17 different majors and 27 different master degree programs. The University is also qualified for conferring master degrees for those who applied for them with paralleled education but also for clinical professionals. It is the only one in Shandong Province to deal with nursery examinations for self-education appliers.
The strategy of WMU is to insist on the teaching works as the core and with special emphasis on scientific research so as to constantly improve the teaching quality and various researches. WMU was one of the first seven universities to pass the teaching assessment carried by the Education Commission of Shandong Province, and ranked first with all the students passing the national examination of clinical medicine. Every year, almost 25% university students pass the Postgraduate Entrance Examination and a half of master students get the opportunity to study for their doctor degree. Since 1978, the University has been granted 25 state scientific research projects, 86 provincial projects, 262 provincial bureau ones and 57 municipal ones. Many of them brought out social and economic benefits after being put into use.

     WMU has actively conducted international exchanges and co-operations. Scholars from America, Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Canada, Australia and Israel have come to visit our university and participated in academic exchanges. Every year the university invites foreign experts to come and teach or take part in the clinical activities, and now we have established the extensive relationships with many universities, both domestic and abroad. Dr. Carleton Gajdusek, the Nobel Medical Prize Winner, have visited WMU and be accoladed the honorary professor of WMU. From 1998, the University began to enroll overseas students (from America, Japan, Canada etc.).

     WMU has be ratified by WHO, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, China Scholarship Council.
