◆ Introduction
Southeast University (SEU) is one of the national key universities administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the first universities accredited by the State Council to determine and approve the qualifications of professors, associate professors and doctorial supervisors. It is also one of the universities of Project 211 and Program 985 that is financed by the central government to build as a world-class university.
The history of the Medical School can be traced back to 1935--The National Central University. Over time, the name of this medical school has undergone changes as "The Medical College of Nanjing University", " 5th Military Medical University", and "Nanjing Railway Medical College" of the Ministry of Railway. It has been renamed Medical School of Southeast University in April of 2000. During more than 70 years' history, a great number of well-known alumni graduated from this medical school, who greatly contributed to the establishment and development of modern medicine and healthy care system of China.
Currently, the Medical School of Southeast University has 6 basic medical departments: microbiology & immunology, genetics & development biology, pathology & pathophysiology, human anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, as well as 12 clinical medical departments, including internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology & obstetrics, paediatrics, nursing, neurology & psychology, radiology, oncology, intensive care medicine, pathology & laboratory, ENT and ophathmology，and sports & rehabilitation. The medical school also boasts 14 research institutes which are dedicated to research, one teaching centre for medical experiments, and 2 key labs sponsored by Jiangsu province and National Education Ministry, respectively. There are 10 teaching hospitals which holds more than 10,000 inpatient beds totally, belonging to the clinical education center. Among them, Zhongda Hospital, the major teaching hospital of the medical school, is one of the first national health ministry-approved top class hospitals in the Jiangsu Province.
Our research labs and faculties are integrated in the campus of Medical School and 10 teaching hospitals. There are several important labs such as the National Educational Ministry Key Lab of Genetics and Biology Development and Jiangsu Provincial Key Lab of Molecular & Functional Imaging, etc. There are around 150 teachers and scientists who are dedicated to teaching and research on basic medicine, while over 1000 physicians who have dual duties of clinic and research in the teaching hospitals. Zhongda Hospital, the major teaching and affiliated hospital of the medical school, is integrated the campus of the medical school. Combined with Zhongda Hospital, the Medical School has set up many research institutes including Institute of Cardiology, Institute of Neuropsychiatry Diseases, Institute of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, Institute of Kidney Diseases, Institute of Hematological Diseases, Institute of Pathology, Institute of Diabetics, Institute of Interventional Radiology, Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Institute of Bone Disease, etc.
