◆ Introduction
The name of the university "Jinan" comes from "The Tribute of Yu" in the Book of History, one of the Confucian Classics, which reads, "Reaching Eastward to the North and South, we shall spread the culture far and wide". The predecessor of the University was Jinan Academy, which was founded in 1906 by the Qing Goverrment in Nanjing, and then moved to Shanghai. In the year 1927 it was renamed as "Jinan National University." During the Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars, the University operated from Jianyang, Fujian Province and returned to Shanghai in 1946. As the People's Republic of China was being established, in August 1949 it was merged with Shanghai's Fudan and Jiaotong Universities, but by 1958 it had been reestablished as independent institution and moved to the city of Guangzhou in China's southern province of Guangdong.
"Though going through ups and downs with the history of the nation since its founding in 1906, Jinan University has never lost its way in the pursuit of truth and knowledge. Under the guidance of the school motto "loyalty, sincerity, integrity and respect", in line with the aim of "modernization, internationalization and comprehensiveness", Jinan University has been developing quickly in recent years and has turned out more than 200,000 thousands graduates.
In 1996, the university was selected to be one of China's "One Hundred Key Universities". Since then, Jinan University has successfully realized a major move forward in the development of instruction, scientific research and social services. By 2007, Jinan University had gained an "Excellent" ranking from the National Undergraduate Education Appraisal Task Force organized by China's Ministry of Education.
The University has 24 colleges (comprising 49 departments), 128 research institutes and 84 labs. The university offers 72 undergraduate major fields, 189 master degree programs, 86 Ph.D degree granting programs and 11 post-doctorial research stations. The university also has 4 national key disciplines, 8 key disciplines of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, 2 Guangdong Province key Level-I disciplines, and 10 Guangdong Province Level-II disciplines. The university also has a key research base of national humanity & social sciences, a teaching & research base for Chinese language & literature of the Education Ministry, a base for national university cultural quality education, a base of national base for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, an educational base for overseas Chinese education of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and a key research base of humanity & social science of Guangdong Province. Still, the university has 1 national engineering center, 3 engineering centers of the Ministry of Education, and 9 key provincial and ministerial key laboratories.
The four campuses of Jinan University locate in three cities, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai. And a new campus is being built in Guangzhou. The four campus cover a total area of 1,695,200m2. The total floor area of the buildings of the four campus cover is 1,004,300m2, and that of student dormitories is 262,100m2. The University has 13 affiliated hospitals with altogether 8,277 sick beds. The staff of the 13 hospitals totals 11,425.
Jinan University has been active at academic exchanges, and has established academic cooperation or academic exchange liaison with more than 140 universities and research institutes in Asia, America, Europe, and Oceania.
Over its long history a galaxy of famous scholars have taught at Jinan, Among these are Ma Yinchu (马寅初), Zheng Zhenduo (郑振铎), Liang Shiqiu (梁实秋), Wang Yanan (王亚南), Zhou Gucheng (周谷城), Qian Zhongshu (钱钟书), Zhou Jianren (周建人), Xia Yan (夏衍), Xu Deheng (许德珩), Hu Yuzhi (胡愈之), Yan Jici (严济慈), Chu Tunan (楚图南), Huang Binhong (黄宾虹) and Pan Tianshou (潘天寿). Presently there are 1,718 full time teachers at the university, including two members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, five members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 338 Ph.D. candidate supervisors, 454 professors and 626 associate professors.
Currently there are 41,607 students in this university, including 27,220 full-time students, 8,556 graduates and 18,664 undergraduates. The number of overseas students,including foreign students, overseas Chinese students, students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, amounts to 11,635. Different cultures converge and blend here.
