Fujian Medical University

 Introduction

     Fujian Medical University (FJMU), located in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province, serves as a center for teaching, research, treatment, and prevention, and provides other social services. It was founded formerly as Fujian Provincial Medical School in 1937, and renamed Fujian Provincial Medical College in 1939 and Fujian Medical College in 1949 respectively. In 1969, its name was changed into Fujian Medical University after moving to Quanzhou and joining with Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Department of HuaQiao University. It then moved back to Fuzhou in 1978, with its name changed into Fujian Medical College in 1982. In April 1996 it adopted its present name. Currently FJMU has two campuses in Shangjie and Taijiang, with a total land area of about 87 hectares and a building area of 379,000 square meters.

    At present, the university comprises 19 schools and departments, which offer 23 undergraduate programs, 22 doctorate programs, 59 master programs, and 2 authorized master degree specialties. In addition to its extensive academic programs, the University has established an efficient clinical teaching and practice network, composed of 1 stomatological hospital, 26 clinical teaching hospitals and 10 affiliated hospitals, of which 9 are ranked among the first-rank hospitals. In 2003 it was designated by Fujian Provincial Government as the university for key construction and development. In the same year, it passed the evaluation for undergraduate education organized by the Ministry of Education.

     Currently, FJMU has a total number of more than 20,000 full-time students, including approximately 2,000 postgraduates, and 10,000 undergraduates. It is also entitled to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and students from foreign countries for its undergraduate programs.

     There is a total number of 5,398 faculty, staff members and medical personnel in the University. Of the 835 full-time teachers, 58% have possessed masters degrees, and 55.1% the title of associate professor or full professor. There are 65 doctoral supervisors, 482 master supervisors, 100 recipients of special subsidies from the State Council, 5 teachers selected by national "Millions of Talents Program", 4 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 3 experts with outstanding contributions awarded by the Health Ministry, 3 recipients of "Excellent Young Teachers Prize by the Ministry of Education", 8 teachers supported by the "Project of Leading Teacher Foundation of the Ministry of Education", 17 chosen as "Outstanding Specialists in Fujian Province", 64 selected by "Fujian Millions of Talents Program", 4 teachers awarded "University Teaching Masters in Fujian Province", 28 recipients of "Cross Century Talents Foundation for Higher Education in Fujian Province", and 2 teams awarded "Provincial Innovation Groups of Higher Education".

    FJMU has also attached great importance to academic research. It hosts 1 post-doctor clinical research center, 65 research institutions, 2 provincial "Project 211" key disciplines, 13 provincial key disciplines, 8 disciplines of prior development designated by Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology, 6 key disciplines at school level, 6 provincial key medical specialties, 5 provincial leading specialties with medical characteristics and 3 key laboratories designated by Fujian Province, which have undertaken great scientific tasks, and made remarkable achievements. Since 2001, more than 100 scientific research programs have been rewarded, over 5,500 papers published, with 86 of them recorded in SCI, and 45 academic works issued as well. The University has published and issued several academic journals to readers at home and abroad, including The Journal of Fujian Medical University (the medical science edition), The Journal of Fujian Medical University (the social science edition), Chinese Journal of Hypertension, and Chinese Journal of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation. The University Library, as the main medical library of Fujian province, holds an area of 25,233 square meters and a collection of 1, 53 million volumes.

     The University has developed collaborative relationships for scientific research and talents training with some universities and medical research institutes from the United States, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Australia, and Canada and so on. In the past 5 years, more than 160 groups, as well as 700 people from the United States, Japan, etc. have visited the University, given lectures and carried out other academic activities. Over 20 overseas alumni have taken posts in colleges, departments or research institutes of FJMU, with 110 experts and alumni engaged as its guest professors.

     Looking back at its past, FJMU has received numerous praises and honors from the society and the general public. Looking forward to its future, with the motto of "diligence, preciseness, practicality, and innovation", the University attempts to improve its role as a key provincial medical university by focusing on its undergraduate education, promoting graduate education and other forms of medical education, and coordinating medical science with other disciplines, aims to fulfill its roles as a teaching and research-oriented medical center, a prevention center, and a major base for cultivating medical talents on the west coast of the Taiwan straits, and endeavors to rank itself among top medical universities.
