Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital

Overview
The Montreal Neurological Hospital is an ultra-specialized academic medical centre where a dedicated team uses a wide array of advanced technology to help patients with diseases and disorders of the nervous system. The hospital has 85 beds, four surgical suites, state-of-the-art equipment for interventional neuro-radiology, advanced CT, PET and MRI scanners, ten specialty day clinics and other facilities. Neurologists, neurosurgeons and other specialists at the Hospital hold academic appointments at McGill University and train the next generation of physicians. These physicians treat patients and conduct advanced research into neurological diseases and disorders.
Inpatients and outpatients are treated for medical problems related to the nervous system including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), back problems, brain tumours, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic pain, epilepsy, headaches, migraine, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson's disease, stroke and other conditions. Patients may also learn about clinical trials of new therapies for their condition or get information about these conditions from the Neuro-Patient Resource Centre.
The Montreal Neurological Hospital is one of five hospitals in the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), one of the most comprehensive university health centres in North America. The Montreal Neurological Hospital is guided by the Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics reflects the values and beliefs of the hospital and its staff, and covers the guiding principles of mutual respect, privacy, promoting open communication, preserving confidentiality and access to health information, informed care and treatment decision making, access to health information, and providing care in a compassionate and responsible manner.

Services
Clinical Trials Studies
The Clinical Research Unit administers clinical trials studies of new drug therapies and treatments to assess their effectiveness. These studies are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies or by government agencies, and are conducted by physicians. Each clinical trial follows a strict protocol and begins only after extensive tests show that experimental drugs are safe for human use. Patients may ask their physician about clinical trials studies relevant to their condition.

Students and Trainees

Neuroscience at MNI and McGill
Neuroscience at McGill is internationally recognized for historical contributions to the field and for high impact in contemporary disciplines from molecular and cellular biology to brain imaging and cognitive neuroscience. Researchers work to better understand normal development, pain, addiction, aging, psychiatric disorders, neurological diseases and other challenging problems.
The MNI is the hub of neuroscience at McGill where excellent training in neuroscience is also offered in departments such as Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science and Engineering, Music, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pharmacology, Physiology, Physics and Psychology, and in McGill affiliated hospital research centres. In this setting, bench meets bedside and translational neuroscience advances. The breadth and depth of neuroscience at McGill is unique, and reflects the tremendous growth and potential of the field.
Students training in neuroscience at the MNI and at McGill have many advantages:
    * Breadth and depth in neuroscience
    * Close integration of clinical and basic neurosciences
    * Hundreds of bright, motivated students and trainees
    * More than 150 neuroscientists in institutes, centres and departments
    * Cross-disciplinary research and training opportunities
    * Extensive infrastructure for brain imaging, genomics, nanoscience, optical imaging, proteomics,
      super computing and more
    * Largest concentration of neuroscientists in North America
    * Interaction with pharmaceutical and biotech industries

Honours Projects
Fourth-year undergraduate students may conduct an Honours Project in an MNI research laboratory. Interacting with scientists and lab personnel, the student conducts a research project and presents a final paper. Each McGill department can provide more information.

Work in Labs
Undergraduate students may work in MNI research laboratories as volunteers or as paid employees to gain valuable knowledge and laboratory experience. To explore opportunities for lab work, students should contact MNI faculty members whose research matches their interests.

Graduate
The Montreal Neurological Institute offers a world-class environment for learning and practicing neuroscience. The MNI is large enough to attract top talent yet small enough to foster strong working relationships and friendships. About 200 students, residents and fellows work in the MNI's 50 research labs. Many pursue a Masters or PhD in McGill University's Integrated Program in Neuroscience, one of the largest such programs in North America. Students learn techniques and develop research skills in brain imaging, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, cognitive psychology, electrophysiology, immunology, morphology, neuro-engineering, systems neuroscience and other specialties. Students at the MNI hear the world's most prominent neuroscientists present their latest work, and enjoy many opportunities to participate in international meetings.

Post-Doc
Post-doctoral fellows are critical to the progress of research at the MNI. By joining a lab, post-doctoral fellows continue their training, work toward an independent career and help guide graduate students. Weekly seminar series, special lectures, international conferences and a collegial atmosphere enrich the MNI's superb training environment. Interested students should contact MNI faculty members whose research matches their interests.

Medical Residents and Clinical Fellows
Medical residents and clinical fellows have trained at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital since its founding in 1934. More than 1,300 former fellows have established careers in prominent medical and academic centres around the world and many are leaders in their field.
