Montreal Heart Institute

Overview
    Founded in 1954, the Montreal Heart Institute constantly aims for the highest standards of excellence in the cardiovascular field through its leadership in prevention, ultra-specialized care, training of professionals, clinical and fundamental research, and assessment of new technologies. It is affiliated with the Université de Montréal and its clinical outcomes are among the best in the world.
    The MHI Research Centre officially came into existence in 1976 and has made enormous strides since its creation. Today, there are approximately 450 employees, students and researchers at the MHI Research Center. The MHI's outstanding feature is the balance it achieves between basic research, clinical research and clinical care. Its prime focus areas of research are vascular diseases, myocardial function and electrophysiology. Genomics (including pharmacogenomics), biomarkers and preventive cardiology are other areas of focus.

Renowned specialists
    The Institute is respected throughout the world, because of the quality of care provided by its medical team, among other things. Constantly seeking excellence and innovation, this team consists of 195 physicians (81 of them full-time members), including:
    * 44 cardiologists
    * 9 cardiovascular surgeons
    * 11 anesthesiologists
    There are eight clinical departments at the Institute, as follows:
    * Medicine
    * Nuclear Medicine
    * Psychosomatic Medicine
    * Cardiac Surgery
    * Anesthesiology
    * Radiology
    * Medical Biology
    * Pharmacy
    In addition to the high-level skills they possess, the Institute's medical team participates in the facility's activities on a fulltime basis: care, research, and teaching. As such, patients of the Institute can find under one roof renowned specialists, expertise and leading-edge technology focused in strategic areas.

Teaching
    The Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) has the status of a university facility for cardiovascular diseases.
    It is affiliated with the Université de Montréal, and contributes to achieving the university's vision by achieving strategic objectives in teaching:
    * Training the best cardiology specialists, specialists in related fields and nursing care
      pecialized in cardiology;
    * Helping patients and the general public better understand and prevent cardiovascular disease and
      its recurrence;
    * Contributing to the national and international influence of the facility through the
      dissemination of knowledge.
    Since it was created, the MHI has contributed to training a large number of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and radiologists specialized in cardiac disease practising in Québec. Internationally renowned for training and its specialization in cardiovascular diseases, the MHI ensures its students that they will receive very high quality instruction offered by teachers who are learned experts in their fields and use as equipment that it is at the forefront of technology.
    Every year, the Institute hosts a large number of physicians from Canadian and international universities and health institutions. It annually welcomes some 50 students in medicine and some 60 residents from across eight specialities: anesthesiology, cardiology, heart surgery, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, psychosomatic medicine, physiatry and radiology. A unique aspect of the Institute is that some fifteen fellows, mainly cardiologists from a variety of countries, come to conduct highly specialized training for a year or two, which is part of the Institute's contribution to the international influence of Québec medicine.
    Aside from these internships for students, residents and medical specialists, other health professional can undergo training in a variety of specialities: health administration, dietetics, electrocardiography, biomedical engineering, respiratory therapy, radiology, nuclear medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing care, laboratory techniques and animal health techniques as part of certain college, undergraduate and graduate programs.
